What You Will Learn

Diploma in Optometry is being phased out in India. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University has stopped Diploma in Optometry admissions from 2020. Diploma in optometry holders from a recognized university may join B.Optom as lateral entry candidates, directly in to the second year. In B.Optom they will learn specialized topics like specialty contact lenses, low vision rehabilitation, optometric optics, specialized dispensing, research methodology, paediatric optometry, geriatric optometry, occupational optometry, binocular vision and vision therapy.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates who have got Diploma in Optometry from any recognized university.

Age limit for admission

There is no age limit for this course. Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can apply.

Delivery Mode

Regular (Non-Semester, yearly exam pattern) with hands-on practical training / learning in labs, refraction clinics and in internship, seminars, group discussions, role plays and demonstrations.

Upgrading from diploma to B.Optom throws open interesting possibilities like:

  • Designing and fitting of contact lenses, prosthetic eyes and low vision aids.
  • Evaluation of the health status of the eye and referring patients to ophthalmologists at the right stage.
  • Detection of eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy etc.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of ocular malfunction.
  • Practice public health optometry in schools, colleges, low income and rural areas.
  • Practice occupational optometry in industries.
  • Conduct optometric counselling for patients with poor sight, colour blindness, hereditary vision defects etc.
  • Conduct vision rehabilitation and follow-up work of discharged patients.
  • Participate in public education on ocular hygiene and provide counselling in nutritional related and environmental awareness.
